Addressing Lack of Darker Skin Representation: New Standardized Imaging Tools for Skin of Color Patients
Speaker: Hawasatu Dumbuya, PhD
Room Location: Murray Hill
Several dermatological conditions may often be misdiagnosed or undercounted in Skin of Color (SOC) patients due to different clinical presentations of the disease compared to white counterparts. Though dermatology training tends to heavily rely on the use of images to teach disease pattern recognition, representative images of dermatological conditions in patients of color are lacking in most medical education resources. During this session, challenges in clinical imaging of darker skin and validation of new imaging devices that have the capability to effectively capture morphology changes in ethnically diverse patients with lightly and darkly-pigmented skin will be discussed.
